Silver Gotland ball (12mm) blue lapis lazuli
Silver Gotland ball (12mm) blue lapis lazuli
A small, deep blue 12 mm ball of lapis lazuli, set in a handmade sterling silver fitting with masterfully crafted silver granulation and filigree work.
History
The original Viking age find that inspired this piece were found on Gotland, an island off the east coast of Sweden. On the island they found over twenty lenses and a couple of spheres made of rock crystal (clear quartz). It’s a very hard material that requires a lot of effort to cut. There are theories that they have been high status symbols, as well as tools for magnifying or fire making.
“Lapis lazuli was the most precious gemstone in the Nordic Late Bronze Age. Blue glass was the next best thing. In the north it must have been almost magic – a piece of heaven.”
-Jeanette Varberg (the head of Moesgaard museum)
Crystal meaning
Lapis lazuli is a mix of blue lazurite, white calcite and golden pyrite. It symbolizes wisdom, spirituality and protection.
